Tonsil Problems

Tonsil problems and getting a Tonsillectomy?

Why is a tonsillectomy performed?

Tonsil Problems Fairfax, VATonsils are a mass of tissue located on either side of the back of the throat. You are most likely to notice your tonsils when they cause throat pain or soreness, which is often the case when someone develops strep throat or a tonsil infection.

While an occasional strep throat or infection is usually not a cause for concern, those with frequent or severe infections may need to have their tonsils removed. The main reason a tonsillectomy is recommended is when the tonsils become so swollen and infected that they begin to block the airways, making it hard to breathe.

What should I expect when I get a tonsillectomy?

A tonsillectomy is an outpatient surgery that is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure itself usually takes between 30 to 45 minutes; however, as with most surgeries, the patient will remain at our office for a few hours after surgery for monitoring before they are released.

When is it time to consider a tonsillectomy?

If you or your child are experiencing seven or more throat infections in one year, are experiencing problems breathing or a growth has begun to form on the tonsils, then it’s time to consider how a tonsillectomy could alleviate your symptoms.

After the anesthesia has taken effect we will use an instrument to keep your mouth open during the procedure. Then we will either cut or shave away your tonsils. Stitches will not be necessary for this procedure, as this tissue will heal by itself.

The recovery process usually takes one to two weeks. Most patients will experience some throat pain or discomfort after surgery. Patients should stick to a soft diet while their throat is healing. Even though some throat infections may still occur after surgery, the frequency will be greatly reduced after a tonsillectomy.
